Austin / McGregor, Texas — Tesla CEO Elon Musk has showcased a new generation Roadster that can thrust itself into the air for short bursts, describing the vehicle as proof that “flying cars are real.”
During a demonstration at a SpaceX facility in Texas, the Roadster used cold-gas thrusters and a suction system to drive up a curved ramp, hang upside down, flip in mid-air, and land. It also leapt over a line of other Tesla vehicles. Musk said the car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under one second.
The flying capability is part of an optional “Rocket” package that will be invitation-only and is not approved for public roads. Standard production of the Roadster is planned for 2028, with the base model priced above $200,000. The demonstration vehicle was controlled remotely.
While the stunt drew widespread attention, critics note that the vehicle performs brief aerial maneuvers rather than sustained flight like dedicated eVTOL aircraft. Regulatory approval and practical everyday use remain significant hurdles.
